Lightning Talk | Main Stage
Host: UN SDG Action Campaign
In this talk, Mitzi Jonelle Tan talks about the life she has chosen — the life of a climate activist in the Philippines. The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the climate crisis. It is also one of the deadliest places for environmental defenders and activists. This puts climate activists there at a difficult position when trying to raise awareness about the climate crisis, its causes, and impacts. To Mitzi, climate justice also means social justice and she dedicates a lot of her time to listening to indigenous leaders and environmental defenders, learning from them, and making sure that the BIPoC and Global South voices are given space and amplified in the global movement. Learn how Mitzi and other climate activists in the Philippines have been fighting against climate injustice especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
