Host: International Organization for Migration

Dastan, an Arabic-speaking migrant to a small, unnamed city in Switzerland, wants what all teenagers want: to fit in. Pitied, bullied and ridiculed by his peers, he is torn between embarrassment for his hijab-wearing mother and shame for himself—for ridiculing his Muslim culture to please the teammates on his soccer squad. This short film, directed by Cosima Frei, makes us feel Dastan’s conflict—which leads to him nearly committing a crime to gain the acceptance of his teammates. The dialogue is in Arabic and German with English and Japanese subtitles.
